UN urges calm due to tensions in Middle East after assassination of Iranian scientist

The United Nations (UN) urged “containment” in the Middle East after the assassination of scientist Mohsen Fajrizadé-Mahabadi who was attacked near Tehran when he was aboard a vehicle, Iran has blamed the attack on Israel and the Tensions in the Middle East have risen.

“We urge containment and the need to avoid any action that could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region. We condemn any murder or extrajudicial execution, “said a UN spokesman.

Iranian scientist Mohsen Fajrizadé, head of the Defense Research and Innovation Organization of the Iranian Defense Ministry, joins the chain of killings of five Iranian nuclear scientists in the last decade.

Fajrizadé died from injuries sustained in the assault on his vehicle, which included at least one explosion, in the town of Absard, located in the province of Tehran, the scientist’s bodyguards allegedly fought a group of assailants.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Yavad Zarif called the attack “state terrorism” and declared that there are “serious indications of Israel’s role.”

Later the newspaper “New York Times” assured that Israeli intelligence officials confirmed the involvement of that country in the attack.
