Naples Stadium is filled with offerings in honor of Maradona

The San Paolo stadium will change its name to Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

This Thursday, November 26, thousands of Napoli fans placed offerings outside the Sao Paolo stadium for the death of Maradona, Lorenzo Insigne, Naples captain, left the stadium and joined the fans to leave a bouquet with the others Offerings.

The city declared a mourning for the death of Maradona, a legend of world football and also the mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, has already started the process to rename the Napoli stadium with the footballer’s name.

Naples fans performed a ritual in honor of his figure that began with a pilgrimage to the Sao Paolo stadium, lighting a candle, leaving a scarf or a shirt and shedding a tear in memory of their idol.

Maradona, was omnipresent in the southern Italian city because he led Napoli to win two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.

“He always defended us. He did it when he was a player here and when he left, ”said Insigne, a native of Naples. “He always carried us in his heart and now we have to carry him in ours since he left. It hurt. It is a sad day for the Neapolitans ”.

“He was the best footballer in history and we are honored that he wore the Napoli jersey and played at this stadium.”

The image of Maradona adorned the screens inside the stadium during the match in which Napoli beat Rijeka 2-0.

All the Naples players entered the court wearing a jersey with Maradona’s number 10 and his name on the back, Napoli’s coach Gennaro Gattuso also wore Maradona’s jersey.

Before the match began, both teams observed a minute of silence and wore a black armband throughout the match.
