Safe, legal and free: Once the law enters into force, every pregnant woman will be able to access abortion in the health system, free and safe, until the 14th week of gestation.
The law also authorizes the conscientious objection of doctors who do not want to participate in abortion, as long as they quickly refer patients to other professionals who carry it out.
The upper house of Senators of Argentina legalized abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and the groups of the “green tide” launched shouts of joy and excitement when the result was known.
The measure was approved in a parliamentary vote that lasted until late at night with 38 votes in favor, 29 against and one abstention.
Thousands of people, for or against the law, gathered outside the Congress waiting for the result.
The “green tide” (group that supports legalization), celebrated the news while the celestial of the group “Provida” showed their disappointment because they rejected its approval.
Until yesterday, legal abortion was only allowed in cases of rape or when the mother’s health was at risk and for years many groups of women in Argentina demanded that the measure be extended.
The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez also welcomed the decision of the Senate: “Safe, legal and free abortion is law. I promised to do so during the electoral campaign days, “he wrote from his official Twitter account.
Argentina from today is a freer country, it is a more egalitarian country and it is a better country, ”said opposition deputy Silvia Lospennato, one of the legislators who promoted the regulation.
Now, all pregnant women who wish to interrupt their pregnancy could do so for free and safely with medical assistance in public hospitals, those under 13 will need the assistance of at least one of their parents or legal representative, those who are between 13 and 16 will only need authorization and those over 16 will be able to decide for themselves.
The Church, for its part, was always one of the detractors of the measure, Pope Francis, the highest representative of Catholics in the world and of Argentine nationality, published a trill in which he assured that “every person discarded is a child of God”.
Latin America has one of the most restrictive legal frameworks on abortion, which is totally prohibited in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In other countries in the region it is only allowed in very specific circumstances.
Only Uruguay, Cuba, Guyana, French Guiana, Puerto Rico and some areas of Mexico currently allow women to request a legal abortion.
