The Vatican has asked its bishops to denounce sexual abuse of minors committed by their priest even if local laws are not severe, all this due to the latest scandals that have shaken the church in recent years.
The “vademecum” or guide is the document that the Vatican issued this Thursday that contains the steps to report sexual abuse of minors to the civil authorities.
Before this guide, the procedure mentioned that sexual abuse had to be reported to their superiors and they were governed by local rules.
A paragraph in the text states: “Even in cases where there is no explicit legal obligation to do so, ecclesiastical authorities should report to the competent civil authorities if deemed necessary to protect the person involved or other minors from the danger of further criminal acts.”
The new process was obtained thanks to the struggle of a group of family members who were victims of priests.
